Ethan reached the fourth floor, where his class is situated and started to walk slower, the teachers, as everybody called the caretakers of the school, didn’t really welcome wanton behavior on the school corridors, and running was considered to be the most wanton of behaviors.
Ethan found his door, knocked before entering and then opened and delved in surreptitiously as only a teenager could.
He slid to his spot on the long desk at the back of the classroom, and soon after his two sides were occupied by a ginger boy and a dark blonde girl.
“Top of the morning, Ethan,” the girl said to him cheerfully enough to light the entire room, not that the room or any of the rooms of the school lacked light, all the classrooms were having one side completely occupied by huge windows that brought the light of the central diamond at the roof of the world in full shine to the teachers and children inside.
Ethan smiled as he faced the girl, “and the same to you too, Sarah,” before he finished, the boy from his other side started, “did you attend the recital of John yesterday? Because his recital and the lyre of Carmen were otherworldly, to say the least,” he seemed too animated for a teenager, but Ethan knew that this was his way to show his feelings, as he was always trying to fit in with the top crowd, and always was failing to do that.
Sarah looked from across the desk to the other boy and said, “I am sure that it was heavenly Malik,” she nodded as she continued, “but you know that this was past sleeping hours, and this might have cost you another demerit from the teachers.”
“You are not as inclined to the fine arts as I, Sarah,” Malik answered in a restrained tone, “if you were, you would have known that the demerits only last as long as we attend the school, once we pass the Dream ritual, they mean nothing.”
“Well, see it that way,” Sarah harrumphed, “demerits mean less time allowed for the extra-curricular activities,” she finished and settled back to her spot on the desk.
Ethan thought that she might have a point, the lessons he got in archery in the extra hours made him feel far more comfortable with the fact of his spurt of growth than anything else, and he didn’t want to lose his archery hour for anything in this world, not even for an otherworldly experience, as Malik called the events of last night.
“You know what,” Malik laughed, “all my extra-curricular hours go into the lyre anyway, I will miss nothing by having some demerits listening to Carmen play it so masterfully.”
“Well, if Carmen was less impressive on the beauty part,” Ethan retorted, “you might not have found her playing to be so masterful.”
Before Malik could counter this comment, the teacher announced the beginning of the lessons.
