The old road stretched promising to Carmen’s flattering heart, a quick run was all it took for her to get out of this place and from the clutches of whoever was calling to her.
Yet, even though the old road promised an escape, her vicious curiosity demanded to know a bit more before she let her legs do the thinking.
“Why are you inside this place?” Carmen looked doubtfully at the fence of the “Church”. Why would anybody enter that place anyway? Besides, she couldn’t see anybody behind that voice.
“They trapped inside.” The voice felt to Carmen’s ears to be anxious, urgent even. “But time is running. We lost the entire dawn.”
“We?” Carmen’s eyebrow raised in disdain. “I wouldn’t assume us to be a ‘We’, you didn’t even invite me nicely.”
“I am so sorry, lady.” The voice came even more anxious than before. “It is just that I don’t have much time on my hands. I promise you that when all of this is over, I will be the perfect gentleman, I will give you half of my treasure.”
Carmen stood silent for some moments. This man was way too bold, did he promise her something with a double meaning?
“Treasure?” Carmen scoffed. “Listen there, you can’t buy my help, I will help for free, I am not that kind of girl.”
“Still, you will be awarded.” The voice sounded jovial, pleased. “I swear it on my honor.”
“OK, now that we settled this, please show yourself.” Carmen left the boundaries of the road and approached the fence gingerly.
“I can’t, not until the cover of the night.” The voice almost whined.
“I think that this is rather suspicious, don’t you agree?” Carmen peered between the high bars of the fence, but she couldn’t see anything.
“I know, but I might scare you off if I show myself in full day light.” He sounded flustered.
Carmen stepped back from the fence in alarm. “And why would you scare me? I fear nothing.” She stepped back to the boundaries of the road.
“Please don’t go.” He cried out. “I will show myself, but please have an open mind about what you are about to see, I beg you.”
Carmen swallowed at the lump forming in her throat. “OK, go ahead, show yourself.”
“Come nearer, you have to touch the fence where the old tree falls on the road outside.” He said in a resigned voice.
Carmen clenched her fists, there was nothing to fear but fear itself, everything that usually scares people, has a perfectly normal and easy to understand reason. People just hurry to judge and pass verdict before having the time to understand.
She approached the fence exactly as she was told, where the old tree touched the road outside with its leaning branches.
With a loud sigh, what looked like a man stepped from the behind the tree. He wore a long coat, long hair, and had a haunted look in his large eyes.
Nothing out of the ordinary, except for the fact that Carmen could see the “Church” through him, in fact, he was completely transparent and he seemed to get out and in of focus continously.
Carmen started to laugh hysterically. That was a ghost, her grandmother was right all along, the old road is haunted.
