Ethan laid back on the mattress, trying to block all the strange thoughts of loss that assailed him, ones that he couldn’t begin to describe or explain even to himself, especially explaining the reason for having them in the first place.
Ethan regulated his breath, and soon he was falling to the soft clutches of troubled sleep. He knew that he was dreaming, which was scary, as the sensation was so much like the one that accompanied the Dream ritual back at Nafoura school, yet he was trapped in this dream, even more so than in the ritual Dream.
Ethan was standing on top of a parapet, and he knew that this was a watchpoint from the high walls of Zarzura, around him were many men all dressed in the white suits designating them as the guarding forces of the great city.
He gazed away from the men to the area surrounding the walls, and there were hundreds, maybe even thousands of magical and mythical creatures all in ranks stood facing the walls. On the head of the strange invading force was a single figure, diminutive in comparison to the surrounding beasts, and he was fairly certain that this was the infamous green lady.
The woman below spoke in a strange tongue and all the creatures seemed to sway and nod to every word that she uttered, something inside the core of Ethan told him that she used the mysterious dragon tongue, kings of the mythical creature and wielders of very powerful intrinsic magic unique to dragon kind.
He also knew that this should not have been possible, no human ever mastered the arcane language in the entire history of the land, as it had syllables made entirely of grunts, huffs and even smoke emitting from their nostrils.
Some powerful mages of the purples could decipher the tongue, and some unique members of the oranges could even communicate fairly well with the grand dragons, yet none could actually fully master the tongue that allows the dragons to be the kings and controllers of all other magical creatures.
Then the attack came, flying creatures assaulted the city from above, huge creatures like the behemoths attacked the wall, while other creatures dug beneath and around the walls from all sides.
But the defenses of the city held, as huge arrows flew from the many parapets like the one, he stood on, pierced wings and bodies of the flying menaces, the walls heated up by their embedded magic repelling the diggers and the braces of the walls stood even the assault of the behemoths.
But the green lady led the creatures in charge after charge till her forces were pushed back, depleted of the will and energy to fight.
Then the dream shifted and this time the army that the green lady led had lots of humans as well, and she didn’t stand alone, she had another figure with her, all covered in a shiny attire as if it was entirely made of steel, but his face was covered with strange shadows.
Then the figure with the green lady held a small object at arms stretch and pointed it to the wall of the city.
For some moments, nothing happened, then all of a sudden, a huge explosion ate a huge portion of the thick wall, then holes started to appear everywhere inside of the city with big explosions and extreme heat.
Finally, the explosions came to Ethan, and he felt as if his skin was melting and peeling away from his body before his entire body was snuffed to dust.
Ethan woke up with a start, and as the singular elements of his dream came to focus, he knew that this was the last stand of the great city of Zarzura with its white marble walls and high spires.
The person with the green lady wielded something of immense power, a magical artifact of sorts, that could blow holes in the magically enhanced walls of the city and snuff bodies to dust in the time it took an eye to flinch from the heat.
Ethan didn’t know how did he have this dream or why did he have it here, but one thing was certain, the dream was some sort of message left behind for any green who might happen upon the devastated city, maybe a final goodbye message to any greens left alive. Or perhaps it was a warning, a shout to avoid the green lady and her cohorts, especially if you were a green like Ethan.
