“This is too much power for such a small machine.” A short woman in regal attire paced through a very large room filled with lab equipment. “Are you preparing for the end of days, John?”
“You believe in that silly prophecy, Celeste?” John snorted.
“Don’t you?” Celeste raised her eyebrows.
“Absolutely not, I am a man of science not superstition.” John pulled one of the many chairs in the room and sat.
“So, to what purpose are you creating this then?” Celeste walked around the huge machine facing the only window in the room.
“Perfection. For ages we were the center of Agartha, the nation with the most powerful Vrill, knowledge and advancement.” John pursed his lips. “But that changed.”
“You mean power then, not perfection.” Celeste smiled.
“Call it whatever name fits your perception of it, and let me call it what it is, perfection.” John arched his back and stretched his arms. “Anyway, I wanted you to know that I finished it before I show it to the ruling council tomorrow.”
“You are not afraid of having this kind of power fall into the wrong hands?” Celeste walked to the machine and touched its rounded contours gently.
“I am the only one able to operate it, so, no.” John stood.
“But what will happen to your great machine after travel on to the great beyond?” Celeste touched the huge crystal at the top of the machine and pulled her hand quickly.
“You felt the power within, didn’t you.” John laughed as he walked towards the machine. “I plan to pass the secret of operating it to a worthy disciple.”
“I think the power of he machine just about matches the size of your ego.” Celeste laughed.
“Why not? I am a great inventor, perhaps even the greatest in all time.” John gently pulled Celeste from the machine. “Beside, you are my love, you should know better.”
“I do love you, and thus, I fear for you.” Celeste moved with him without resistence.
“Fear not, it is all under my control.” John smiled as he led her out of the room.
Celeste couldn’t help but think that those words preceded great calamities in the past.
After a night had passed, John stood in front of the ruling council.
“People of Atlantis, the jewel of Agartha.” He looked around him to all thirteen members of the council. “I have finally finished my greatest invention.”
The thirteen all knew John and they acknowledged his genius, so it was natural that all of them clang to every word he said.
“I present you with the Jewel of Atlantis, the first ever perpetual energy production crystal.” John walked to his machine covered by a silk tarp and pulled it, exposing the metallic contours of the machine and the immense crystal on top.
All thirteen members stared at the machine for some seconds.
“But what makes it any different from all the other power generating crystals around the city?” A council member craned to look at the machine as he addressed John.
“Many things my lord, first and foremost, is that this machine will never need the crystal to be replaced, forever.” John passed his hand over the crystal softly then started to bang it viciously.
All council members covered their heads, expecting the fragile crystal to break and release a wave of energy that could burn them all to a crisp like all its brethren spread across the city.
“Fear not lords and ladies, it is also unbreakable.” John smiled and bowed.
“Impressive, indeed. But other than that it is not so different than the other crystals.” Another council member said. “And crystals are quite cheap to replace, esteemed inventor John.”
“As I said, it differs in many ways.” John gave a signal to his assistant, who dragged a large metal box to the middle of the room.
“Observe the other function of my greatest invention.” John walked to the machine and touched several parts of its contours briefly, then the machine came to life.
The crystal shone with a very bright light, that some of the council members had to cover their eyes from its power.
John moved the machine and with a twist the crystal descended from the top and was facing the metal box.
“This box is made of enforced steel and inside it are several bars of lead and other heavy metals.” John signaled to his assistant who rushed and opened the box for the council members to see what is inside.
“Now, please watch carefully.” John signaled to the assistant and young man almost ran out of the room.
John touched again the contours and a humming sound came from the crystal, then there was a sound like a muffled sneeze and a ray of pure white hit the metal box.
For a second the box was all alight and the council members murmured, then it just ceased to exist.
John touched the machine again and the humming and light stopped, and the crystal climbed up to its original position on top of the machine.
“This my lords, is just another function of the machine.” John bowed to the stunned council members.
