“Lord Gilliam,” the guard panted as he entered the room of the council member responsible for the security of Atlantis, “Akakor announced that they will strike us. They are already on the move, my lord.”
Lord Gilliam pushed his chair and stood behind his desk. “Who gave this information? Answer fast.”
“They have already sent a crier to the borders of Atlantis.” The guard managed to control his breathing. “The small villages are already getting vacated, they are coming to the city my lord, the first refugees just crossed the gate ten minutes ago.”
“And they are the one to tell of this news?” Lord Gilliam gnashed his teeth.
“Yes, my lord.” The guard was all composed and he stood at attention. “During the routine questioning for the reason of the visit, they all said the same thing, Akakor strikes within two days. Their entire adult population is armed and on the move as we speak.”
“Alright, it is good you delivered the message as fast as you did.” Lord Gilliam turned away from the guard and pulled a blue cube from his desk’s first drawer. “You may go.” He turned to watch the guard.
When the guard left, he held the blue cube and squeezed it in his palm. Then he whispered to it. “Atlantis is in danger, Akakor is on the move.”
Within an hour lord Gilliam was joined by all the council members of the ruling caste of Atlantis.
“So, this news is confirmed?” Lady Miriam held her hand held fan and blew at the sweat gathering at her forehead and at the base of her neck.
“I am afraid so.” Lord Gilliam pulled at his neatly arranged beard. “We used one of our most powerful scrying eyes, and the troops of Akakor are already on the march.”
“When should we expect Akakor’s Strike?” Lady Jennifer paced around the room. “And are we ready for this onslaught?”
“At the rate they were marching, tomorrow at dawn.” Lord Gilliam sighed. “And, no, we are not prepared for such huge army. Akakor is on the move, its entire population is coming to our doorsteps.”
“Then tell us what do we have to try to work with.” Lord Malakai stared at lord Gilliam. “We can do a lot of damage using our builders, we have some immense machinery at hand.”
“We have five thousand trained element manipulators.” Lord Gilliam started counting off his hand. “We have six crystals facing the army and we have another seven thousand element manipulators under training, and this is about it.”
“Alright, the science ministry has John, and his horrible machine.” Lord Fergus pursed his lips. “We hope he doesn’t use that horrible machine, but desperate circumstances require desperate measures.”
“I think if we did, it will be the worst kind of mark our race would have left on the face of Agartha.” Lord Gilliam looked at his hand trembling in his lap.
“We also have the chemists, the builders and may we never need them, we always have the hounds.” Lady Miriam pushed the fan even closer to her face as swallowed hard.
“I thought they were all terminated?” Lord Gilliam stared at her in shock.
“Don’t look at me like that, it was not my idea to keep them alive.” Lady Miriam spat the words.
“It was mine.” Lady Celeste sauntered in the room. “They are humans just like you and me and they had the right to live.”
“Lady Celeste.” Lord Gilliam bowed till his head was at level with his knee.
“Your ladyship, you understand that the hounds are the main cause Agarthans of different aura color are not allowed to intermingle.” Lord Fergus abased himself in front of Celeste.
“My precious mother was aware of my decision.” Lady Celeste sat in the nearest empty chair. “Besides, the name ‘Hounds’ makes them less than human, and they are not.”
“But they are far more powerful than all of us, and most of the citizens of ElDorado, and those are very powerful magicians.” Lady Miriam knelt low in her chair. “They are almost uncontrollable.”
“We are aware of that, and as long as they live peacefully, they are none of your concern.” Lady Celeste’s eyes touched every one of the thirteen in the room.
“What if we do need them in battle?” Lord Gilliam asked timidly.
“Then whoever volunteers to defend his or her homeland is welcome to join.” Celeste pursed her lips. “Besides, we will not need them, we have John’s machine. If you have any other solution to deal with the situation at hand, that is the move provoked by Akakor, be my guests.”
Total silence loomed heavily over the entire room.
Lord Gilliam looked to lady Miriam then to the rest of the council.
“Alright, lady Celeste, we trust the royal house to care for our fair city.” Lord Gilliam bowed. “But just know this, using this machine will have deep and resounding repercussions.”
“Thank you lord Gilliam.” Celeste smiled a beatific smile. “I expected nothing less of you.
She stood. “Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to talk to a man about a machine.”
Just as Celeste left the room, lord Gilliam said, ” May the fates favor us, I see nothing good coming out of this.” He sighed. “We have to accept the reality, Akakor is on the move, and we will do anything to stop our oldest enemy.”
