“I am not the one who has to keep a monster at bay under my own skin,” Black danced in front of Darren, causing him to stop suddenly, “this is your burden, and I was just trying to help.”
Darren felt the asinine comments digging deeper and deeper as they went on their journey, in the beginning, the mysterious Mr. Black was quite kind and encouraging, now he was as encouraging as being chased by an avalanche.
Before Darren could counter the scathing comment of Black, he hit his boots on some root, which was running too deep to be pulled by his force, causing him to stumble for a moment.
Black didn’t even offer a hand to save the falling Darren, only his own muscles and reflexes helped him not to crash face-first on the ground, not that the man ever even touched Darren in any way, Darren suspected that the older man couldn’t affect the physical world that much.
He adjusted in mid-fall and turned the fall into a crouch, it was not the most impressive of moves, but it was good enough for the purpose of avoiding a smashed nose.
Darren just gave up, he turned to sit in the long grass, then he stretched and laid back looking directly to the heavens above him.
Black stood hovering above him, silent as a statue, like the ones adorning the center of the city where Darren came from, only those statues had a straight posture and serene faces.
After some minutes, Darren grew bored by his laying down, a thing he only did to spite Black, so, he stood up, since Black had shown no interest in his laid back behavior.
As he was standing up, he had a unique angle of viewing through the bases of the trees and the bushes, and in the distance, he thought that he saw a dragon’s head.
“Crouch lower Mr. Black,” Darren called to the older man excitedly, “Is that a dragon’s head in the distance?”
Being that he was a red and a shapeshifter, his eyesight was especially powerful, and he could discern some facets of a scene most other people couldn’t, and he was fairly certain of what he had just seen.
The older man looked where Darren pointed and said, “yes, I believe that it is, although, from the way it is facing the ground with an unfaltering stare, I would say that it was dead.”
Darren smiled a big smile and started to run through the bushes to the place he believed the dragon’s head was.
After a few minutes of very hard running, he arrived at the spot.
“It is not a dragon,” he commented as he examined the body of the great beast, “I think that this is a land wyvern,” he approached the dead wyvern gingerly, and he said, “I wonder what or who killed it?”
“Whoever did it, they used something to make those huge holes where the eyes of the beast were,” Black pointed to the gaping holes in the head, an observation that Darren was just about to mention.
“Yet, whoever did this,” Darren pointed from the head to the front paw of the beast, “doesn’t know much about wyvern, they didn’t touch the tail which is as strong as diamond, even stronger than any metal in the land,” then he ponied to the head, “or the head which has the memory diamond and instead they cut off a paw.”
He shook his head in wonder, then he pointed to the body again, “They didn’t even start skinning the beast, now that it is dead, the flaps around its belly should be loose and it would have taken them less than an hour to skin the whole beast,” he gave a bark of a laugh, and continued, “something that I will start on right now, that armor is quite easy to skin, not that heavy to lift and can make the best armor in the land,” he grinned, “and if can’t find somebody to make armor out of it, it can fetch a handsome price.”
Finishing his words, he drew out his serrated sword from its scabbard on his back and started working on skinning the beast.
After he removed almost all the major parts of the armor, at least the ones that can be used or sold easily, he started to scrap them with his long knife, till the armored skin was almost as thin as normal leather, and as light.
He then folded the large find, pulled a vine from a nearby crawler and started to tie it tight around his find, then he fashioned straps of the vines for him to carry the precious skin.
