“Hey Rowida,” a boy of around twelve called to Rowida who held a circular ten-inch wide wooden disk and ran through the large playfield. “Pass it to me, I am open.”
She looked at him, then looked to his left, where a tall girl sneaked behind him, then looked to another girl from her team who was walking at the perimeter of the playfield.
“Mona,” Rowida shouted to the girl as she threw the disk. “Catch.”
Mona caught the disk and an with it to the finish line, then as she touched it, she turned and let the disk fly high.
The disk was almost a blur against the noon sun for a moment, but then it started to descend and as it fell, all twenty-four players ran to catch it.
Rowida jumped high, higher than most, even though she had the slightest build in both teams and caught the disk, then she ran to their side of the playfield and planted the disk at the ground with a grunt.
She got the point and won the game.
Her teammates rushed her as the other students at Nafoura exploded in cheers, and she waved her arms in the air to their cheer.
Before leaving the playfield for everybody to return to their individual dormitories, Rowida stood alone watching the field with admiration.
She knew exactly how the other team would react, and she led her team with a plan she made days ago, every action anticipated, every move well known by her teammates.
They didn’t win because of their exceptional sports aptitude, or because they had better endurance; they won because Rowida set the strategy of the game and directed it from the middle of the action.
She gave the filed a last smile as she headed finally to her home building, today this game, and tomorrow, who knows.
