Ethan stood in front of the gate with the rest of the graduates, his heartbeats drummed in his ears as the blood thrilled through his veins in anticipation.
He wasn’t really scared; he was a lot more thrilled than he was afraid. Alright, he was afraid, maybe a little, after all, nobody really knows what happens to the people who enter the blinding light behind the gates.
Each time the Dream ceremony came, he watched in awe as graduates stood in front of the gate like he was doing at this very moment, and every time the gate opened, everybody had to shield their eyes, including the ones about to leave the city, as behind the gate was only this glaring white light that covered everything in its cold stare like a miniature sun, just like the one hanging above the land of Agharta.
He didn’t have to wait for so long, as the gate started to open, and as he expected, the light was so bright this close, that he had to shut his eyes and even put his left hand on top of them to shield them from the blinding light, he tried to manage the weights of the weapons and the packs as suddenly he felt them become far heavier when he closed his eyes.
He knew that this was just an illusion created by his terrified mind, he breathed in and out rhythmically to govern his building anxiety, and to try to control his body before it entered into a panic.
He stood still for a long moment waiting for a sign when none came, he just sighed and then he stepped into the light.
For a second he felt as if he was back in the Dream, as his body felt weightless, in fact, he didn’t feel that he even had a body at all.
This rushed the building panic, but at the same time, it was a reason for him to relax, as this meant that he still had a body that can encompass the essence fear and can panic, on realizing this, instantly he felt that the fear left him.
Then he felt a tug at the center of his core, as if somebody, a giant maybe, held him in his grip, and accidentally or purposefully touched his heart or was this his soul being separated from its earthly husk?
The tugging turned swiftly to pulling, a wrenching then a rending, and he started to scream, but no sound came at all, as everything in this place wherever it was, was completely silent, and even though he started by entering into the light, it was pitch black in here.
As suddenly as the whole thing began, it ended, and he was falling on all four to the ground.
